I recently found myself using what seems like one of the best S60 apps available: Joikuspot. Especially having unlimited 3G service, my N95 8GB, a notebook and of course Joikuspot means I can hop online at fairly high speeds anywhere where 3G is available on the island, which in my case means everywhere!
Recently I really have gotten into gaming and the media possibilities of the Playstation 3 and found myself going to friends with my PS3 and needing high speed internet access. One of the easiest solutions I turned to was the N95 8GB + Joikuspot +3G. The PS3 is able to detect WLAN connection and connect wireless, but no matter what I did it just didn’t want to see the Joikuspot connection.
After a bit of searching, it was clear what was wrong: Joikuspot on S60 based smartphones only supports the ad hoc mode, while devices like the PS3, PSP, Nintendo DS and IPod Touch require WLAN in an infrastructure mode. To make sure this works all you need to do now is check if your device can get online via infrastructure mode.
In the end I’m left with one question, is this a limitation of Joikuspot or Symbian S60? The reason why this is unclear is because of these two phrases used on the Joikuspot FAQ section:
“E) Why doesn’t JoikuSpot work with Sony PSP or Nintendo DS?
Sony PSP and Nintendo DS require WLAN infrastructure mode. JoikuSpot does not support this yet.”
“D) Why does JoikuSpot appear as computer to computer (ad hoc) network?
Currently Symbian OS used in Nokia phones does not support WLAN infrastructure mode.”
A 3G-enabled Nseries, 3G service and joikuspot is a killer combination, but a whole lot of devices can be added if infrastructure mode can be added. Is this a limitation of Symbian S60 or Joikuspot? What do you think?

Your post doesn’t explicitly mention what Joikuspot does, and is therefore a bit cryptic! I don’t google on everything that passes through my newsreader.
Fortunately I did look it up in this case: In essence, Joikuspot turns your symbian device into a WLAN hotspot. Very cool!
“D) Why does JoikuSpot appear as computer to computer (ad hoc) network?
Currently Symbian OS used in Nokia phones does not support WLAN infrastructure mode.”
i don’t understand this, as i can connect nokia phones (E61i/N82/N93i/E65/N80) to WLAN (infrastructure network).
to be a infrastructure mode hotspot means to act as an router / server that can provide internet access to more than one client. it also needs more resources. have you ever tried to make a notebook with a wlan card to a access point? it is possible, but running windows it is hard to get software for it. with linux it is much easier, but you need one of some special wlan cards. dont ask me which, but thats how it is. normal wlan cards are “dumb” and cannot act as access point. thats why i think it will never work on a phone, except the manufacturer implements it.
they wanted to say in faq:
. if you ask me not very soon since this is very low priority feature that will not be recognised very well in mainstream market.
joiku spot currently does not support infrastructure mode due to symbian limitations and support will be added as soon as limitations are solved and nokia releases adequate APIs.
i bought this program thinking that when am looking after my friends house (who has no internet)i can still go online with my ps3 via this.how wrong was i.like you have said no infrastructure mode so no chance of it.i wish the site explained it more clearly b4 i bought it.also i should of googled it.sounds like alot of messing around too for something as simple as using firefox.just use the phone.decent speed web surfing and download pretty much anything and everything in a zip.
Really could do with the infrastructure mode so I can get my NDS to work with it.. Now thats cool
any info?
I solved the issue with the PS3. I posted the solution on a portal but it is in spanish. Basicaly what you can do is share the wireless connection on a computer with windows xp which automatically sets the ethernet card with a certain ip and subnet mask.
Connect the computer using the wireless card to JoikuSpot and the PS3 to the ethernet port of the computer using a 10/100 RJ45 cable.
There is no need for crossover if you are using a machine that is not very old. Both PS3 and the machine will switch the pair.
On the PS3 go to network settings and let PS3 set the connection with the computer.
Now you will have PS3 online. You will need JoikuSpot Premium to do this because of the ports.

Why use this software when you can buy a bluetooth adapter(if your laptop doesn’t already have one)and use it to connect your pc to the internet via your phone?
