A high-end device deserves a high-end Bluetooth headset, right? If you answered with a resounding “Yes” and your looking for something from the Nokia camp, chances are your search will lead to the BH-902 or the stylish BH-804, the subject of this First impression. The BH-804 comes from Nokia’s line of premium design-centric BH-800 series of Bluetooth headsets and is just one step up from the previous BH-803.

The BH-80x series of earphones has always been all about style and design, looking more like a fashion accessory than a piece of technology and it shows! Just like other models from the BH-800 series, the BH-804 has the included trademark Nokia neck strap, as a result, when not in use the user is expected to “wear” the headset rather than keeping it in the ear like other models. Because of there fashion first design they are also much smaller than their feature-rich  BH-900 siblings.

First thing that stand out is the packaging. Instead of going the plain box route, they decided to use a “hidden treasure”theme with matching key, lock and treasure box! A simple map with various sections is used to explain the different features of the unit and going through the different sections eventually leads to a key that opens the box. Nokia scores extremely big on the presentation. All of this is done without going all out on materials like Nokia’s 8800 phones. For example, the box may look real metal when in fact it’s just a plain box with a faux metal look. Next generation Nseries devices could take a few hints from the BH-804’s box when it comes to the overall presentation.

The Bluetooth headset’s quality is beyond anything I’ve seen so far on the market, besting even the Jawbone or BH-803 I’ve had the chance to use during the Nseries Urbanista event. One single piece of aluminum is used for the larger part of the unit, giving it an extremely sturdy feel, while at the same making it unusually light. Once I got the first glimpse of the BH-804 it appeared to be much smaller than what I originally thought and picking it up feels strange as you would expect a unit with such light weight to be very fragile, when in fact it’s far from that. The textured aluminum finish not only looks good, but is a delight to touch. One interesting observation is that the unit gets quite cold due to the material used. The design is all about blending in rather than standing, all done in a very tasteful way.

The desk charger is nice touch and I’m glad it uses the universal microUSB for charging.

Simply put, the BH-804 is an amazing achievement in design and should feel right at home next to a N97 or one of Nokia’s 8800 series of phones. Stay tuned for the full review in due course. In the mean time, here are a few high quality shots of the BH-804 in its full glory.
