Currently there isn’t an easy way to do a hard reset on the N900. Nokia should include this in a future firmware as there is an urgent need for this feature: for performance reasons, a “clean start” and when selling your devices.
A Care Specialist for Nokia has shown how to do a hard reset for the N900, this is the only way to do this until we get an easier method. Tried this myself and it should work!
From a windows PC
1.Download the flashing software.
The first software you need is called “Maemo Flasher”, and this is the program that needs to be installed on your PC and can be found here:
http://tablets-dev.nokia.com/maemo-dev-env-downloads.php
Download the latest version of Maemo Flasher (which is currently 3.5 at time of posting this), and make sure you download the .exe file.
Install that file.
2.Download image files for the N900 itself
These files can be found here:
http://tablets-dev.nokia.com/nokia_N900.php
2A.This page will ask you to enter your IMEI, with very clear instructions on where to find it.
Follow the on screen prompts until you reach the download section.
There are two pieces of software you need to download from there.
- eMMC content – This is the package to erase all data held on your 32GB storage.(For PR1.3 choose the one marked Latest)
- OS – This is your operating system.
2B.There are two eMMC packages available, so download the Latest. For PR1.3 It’s called:
RX-51_2009SE_10.2010.13-2.VANILLA_PR_EMMC_MR0_ARM.bin
2C.The OS is a little more difficult to figure out which one you need.
The notes alongside the software lets you find the right package easier.
I found the best way to check is to do the following: (On the N900)
- Menu
- Settings
- About Product
This will show you this image(or similar)
Note the Version number on your N900′s screen.
Download the OS package that matches the Version on your device. As shown in the image above, using the red text as an example.
For people that purchased the N900 in the UK, the OS package will probably be the same as the red text (203). But make sure you check. Also be sure to download the Latest version of your package, which is marked by the word Latest.
This might also help, check the last 3 digits of the software:
For USA (Last 3 digits are 002) you will need the file called:
RX-51_2009SE_20.2010.36-2.002_PR_COMBINED_002_ARM.bin
For Middle East and North Africa (Last 3 digits are 003) you will need the file called:
RX-51_2009SE_20.2010.36-2.003_PR_COMBINED_003_ARM.bin
For India (Last 3 digits are 004) you will need the file called:
RX-51_2009SE_20.2010.36-2.004_PR_COMBINED_004_ARM.bin
For UK (Last 3 digits are 203) you will need the file called:
At time of writing, UK file was not uploaded, yet.
For Global (Last 3 letters are MR0) you will need the file called:
RX-51_2009SE_20.2010.36-2_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin
Software downloads complete.
3.Place these two software packages in the following location on your PC.
c:\program files\maemo\flasher-3.5
You should now have two .bin files in the directory above.
Next steps.
4.Updating the N900 OS
- Your battery needs to be 100% full to prevent any crashes which could leave your phone dead.
- Turn your N900 off.
- Press and hold the U key on the keypad.
- Insert the USB cable, into a USB port, NOT a USB adapter. (a USB symbol should appear on the top right of your N900 screen, and also the Nokia logo in the centre).
- You can now let go of the U key.
- On your PC: Navigate to the Start Menu and select Maemo>Maemo Flasher 3.5>Maemo Flasher 3.5
- In the command window you should now see: C:\Program Files\maemo\flasher-3.5>
- Type: flasher-3.5 -F RX-51_2009SE_20.2010.36-2.002_PR_COMBINED_002_ARM.bin -f
(the file “RX-51_2009SE_20.2010.36-2.002_PR_COMBINED_002_ARM” name above may be different to yours, you will need to replace the filename with the filename of the software you downloaded). One easy way to do this is to navigate to C:\Program Files\maemo\flasher-3.5 and get the name of the file their. Depending on your region the file name can be:
RX-51_2009SE_20.2010.36-2.002_PR_COMBINED_002_ARM.bin (USA)
RX-51_2009SE_20.2010.36-2.003_PR_COMBINED_003_ARM.bin (Middle East and North Africa)
RX-51_2009SE_20.2010.36-2.004_PR_COMBINED_004_ARM.bin (India)
RX-51_2009SE_20.2010.36-2.004_PR_COMBINED_203_ARM.bin (UK)
RX-51_2009SE_20.2010.36-2_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin (Global)
9.This image below shows the completed update of the OS, in the command prompt on your PC. This would have now removed any Apps you may have installed on the device, and reset the homescreens to how they were when you turned it on for the first time.
Your personal data, such as Contacts, Images, SMS will still be on the device.
So if you want to remove these as well, follow the next steps.
10.Do not disconnect or reboot the device the device. Just leave as is for now.
5.Resetting the Mass Memory
1.Type in the command window :
flasher-3.5 -F RX-51_2009SE_10.2010.13-2.VANILLA_PR_EMMC_MR0_ARM.bin -f -R
This image below shows the completed reset of the eMMC (32GB HDD), in the command prompt on your PC.
This would have now removed any data you had stored there. Including Music, Photos, Contacts, SMS..
The complete reset of your N900 (Or Update) is now complete.
Note: This process won’t work with 64-bit versions of Windows 7 or Vista. You’ll either have to look for an XP system or use Windows XP Mode with Virtual PC on 64-bit versions of Windows 7 Pro or Ultimate.

wrega,
1.Make sure you install pc suite, so that it has the drivers software.
2.Go into device manager (while its looking for the USB device) and right the N900 device that at this might has a yellow warning sign, and let windows search for drivers or updates. That helped with me.
Still not working. Seems not to be a driver problem. Seems that the emmc is corrupted. Any other clue?
Thanks for your attention.
I would bring it back to where I bought or send it to a Nokia care center.
would it kill you to come up with something more user friendly like a on device hard or soft reset that works cause your soft reset clearly does not let name a list of devices manufactures that do
dell
palm
Motorola
htc
apple (threw up in mouth saying that)
and pretty much every android os phone does this perfectly
but you product the n900 does not it a big world your a top for now but that could change you already have a swarm of people opting out of your n900 more for re-sell than i can count starts in the sky fix product get you act together better support more functionality, more user friendly the fact a user has to see comandline at all show how lazy you are

oh and another thing nokia whats with the phone not being able to draw power from the computer its connected to while updating or not wtf is up with that a software issue? hardware? you need to fucking fix it
my n900 iss refusing to boot up at all….would this process help solve this problem
I’m pretty sure it will!

Hi, I just wanted to say thanks for the guide as it helped me to get back into my n900 after I somehow managed to lock it with a totally unknown PIN whilst I was half asleep playing with the settings.
just two things about the guide though that need to be slightly modified.
step 6 says “On your PC: Navigate to the Start Menu and select Maemo>Maemo Flasher 3.5>Maemo Flasher 3.5″. whilst this opened the app, it would not allow me to re-flash successfully for some reason. I noticed the screenshot showed an actual command line window started from a cmd.exe shortcut in the john the ripper folder, not the start menu so when i tried it this way it re-flashed the phone fine. this is in win7 x32, not sure if it makes a difference, but it might be worth a mention.
also, the command you have in step 8 of section 4 (updating the n900 OS) is:
flasher-3.5 -F RX-51_2009SE_10.2010.19-1.002_PR_COMBINED_002_ARM.bin –f
which is missing the -R from the end, based on the screenshot.
i don’t know if it’s 100% necessary for it all to work, but I added it anyway. in the eMMC flashing guide the -R is there, just not in the first section.
thanks again, you saved me having to take it back to a nokia care centre again only 24 hours after i’d gotten it back after fixing a broken screen.
)
thank-you..worked fine after i got the “-f -R” straight.yes sir a new phone again!!!
I simply did a reset vai the settings menu (I guess that’s a soft reset?) and my phone is like new again. What am I missing by not doing the hard reset? I did Soft reset by: Menu> Settings> Clicked Setting Title @ top of page> Restore Original Settings>Default pin is 12345. Thanks.
Works like a charm, but there were some caviats
I couldn’t get Flasher-3.5 to find my n900 when connected to my laptop running windows 7 x64 Professional. It was only waiting and nothing happened. Then I decided to try it on EEE 901 netbook running win XP pro (x86). Worked at first try. Btw, I installed Ovi suite prior to istalling Flasher-3.5.
vibe666, “-R” option does the following: “-R, –reboot Reboot the board (e.g. after flashing NOLO)” (from flasher-3.5 help)
Hi
i have N900 some how my screen display was not working i can see only line please send me some solution
thanks

Hi There,
I also have a N900 and it crashed when i performed a OTA update in march (PR1.2?) and with a low battery.
Finally i succeeded in flashing the FW to RX-51_2009SE_10.2010.19-1_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin with the flasher-3.5.exe -F RX-51_2009SE_10.2010.19-1_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin -f command in Meamo flasher 3.5.
I couldn’t turn of the N900 with the off button and it would reboot every single time with the notification “updating software”
Couldn’t connect a usb cable and “enter” the N900 in usb mode for a backup/ flash.
Switched the N900 off by removing the battery and then turned it on in usb mode by holding the “u” button and connecting the usb cable.
In the mean while i installed meamo flasher 3.5 and had it up and running to press enter with “flasher-3.5.exe -F RX-51_2009SE_10.2010.19-1_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin -f” at the ready when the phone came on.
The software at first couldn’t find the phone but in a few seconds it started flashing without further problems.
I didn’t want to flash the emmc memory because of the things i didn’t want to loose.
Thank you again for this guide and hope it helps loads of people.
Greetings,
Richard.

Thanx mate;
My phone was totally not responding and gave me alot of headache; I did until your first step and things are back to normal.

Hi,
I’m not getting the matching OS package… none of the packages are matching with my version. My verion is 20.2010.36-2.203.1
please advice.
Thank you.
this has completley screwed my phone up!!!!
I followed this tutorial to a tee and now my phone wont load with an operating system. Instead I get 2 pink squares floating on a black background without any text or way to use the phone.
I have tried re-installing flasher and starting from scratch, but now every time that I copy the 2 OS and eMMc files into the flasher directory the flasher software boots and ends seconds after loading it and you can not enter commands into it.
Can someone out there please help as my phone is now unusable.
Thank you “Thenokiaguide.com” you are the BEST ! You save me !

[...] After a major firmware update it’s always a good idea to start clean, and do a hard reset, which can lead to faster performance. After installing or uninstalling programs, updates and now a major update on top can lead to OS slow downs. That’s why we highly recommend doing a hard reset. As always remember to backup! Instruction on how to do this can be found here. [...]

Hi
My phone’s version is;
20.2010.36-2.205.1
This isn’t on the list of OS’s available for download.
After a quick search on Google, it seems this is the Vodafone version.
Could I download the Global or UK OS to replace my current version?

the application manager has completed the instalation, but then the manager keep refreshing and i cant close the program.
so i thought it should be a little problem. I turned off the nokia and i turned it back on, but then it stayes on the white nokia front and after 5 seconds it turned off.
i searched on the internet to solve this problem and then i get here, i folowd the steps, but after step 4.8 the command says: %m
what does it mean? and how can i fix the problem?
kind regards!
I’m having problems with my N900. After having a Malfunction System error I tried flashing the N900. I did a Hard Reset and now I can turn my N900 on but I have no more mass memory. Here the Storage details:
“Device Memory
Total size 455,5 MB
In use by system 227,8 MB
User files 207,9 MB
Available 19,9 MB
12kB Contacts”
I have no more files on it. I can’t send or receive one single message. I can’t even open the camera. The error message is always “Not enough memory to open camera”. When I try other functions the error message is “Operation temporarily disable due to low memory”. It just doesn`t it works. I´d tryed fhashing it several times but nothing. I bought my N900 in January, 2010 and after so many flashing I don´t know which is the original Product Version.
I tried first Update N900 OS and after Reset Mass Memory. After I tried reset the mass memory and update the OS.
My question: is there any problem in using the first or the last OS and eMMC software packages?
How can I restore my original mass memory? My N900 can´t neither recognize a memory card.
Thank you so much
Devin.
Thank you SO MUCH!!!
I though tmy N900 died. Your explanations on this page with all the links really helped me out and everythign worked EXACTLY LIKE YOU DESCRIBED.
FYI i ad been messing around and installed Kernel power flasher. When I tried ot uninstall it, my fone wen tinto restart but would not show the progress dots at boot.
It would just vibrate and then show the nokia logo for 3 secs and then blank screen and then do that again and again into a loop. I thought I had lost my fone. Thanks again! And thanks also for mentioning it does not work under W7-64 bit ultimate. I started my old XP pc after months and transferred all the downloads you gave on your links there. Again, Thank you!!!
I did the flash then the complete erase of the files… and the OS was COMPLETELY MESSED UP!!! OMG!!! I did exactly what this said, and my Nokia once started, showed weird characters, when you touched it the screen would then go black. OMG plz HELP
oh no!!! reflashed it again and it all works now!! THANKS!!!
Hi, Thank you for the detailed advice..
I am having a N900 bought from France and using it in USA. I had the sim not detected problem for a while and thinking of doing a hard reset. So which file should I download. USA or Europe or Global..
Thanks in advance..
At first I freaked out because my phone displayed illegible characters then I performed the flash again and it wouldn’t start so I did it like three more times. Finally I got my phone to work again but the procedure didn’t fix my ‘non-working’ BT, which was my problem.
Thanks anyway; it ended up fixing a problem I was having with my videos.
P.S. I would be great to know how to fix a broken BT adapter.
I tried this procedure and updating the os went by fine telling me CMT flashed successfully. But when I wanted to flash the mass memory with the emmc image it told me no suitable device found, waiting…
What am Isupposed to do from here? my nokia device is currently stuck on the start up screen (5 bubbles orcircles) and nothing is happening, turning off the device also doesn’t seem to work, no reaction whatsoever. Battery was at 70% when started and shouldn’t have depleted so quickly also my version for the device was 20.2010.36-2 with no numbers at the end som my assumption as that I shoul take the global version. I used the first command:
flasher-3.5 -F RX-51_2009SE_20.2010.36-2_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin -f
which worked fine apparently and the phone stayed with the screen of the nokia logo + the usb icon.
When I entered the following command it simply gave me no suitable device found, waiting… and my nokia n900 screen changed to the load up screen but immediately got stuck at it. I checked the device manager and can’t find nokia n900 on there at all and it is still connected:
flasher-3.5 -F RX-51_2009SE_10.2010.13-2.VANILLA_PR_EMMC_MR0_ARM.bin -f -R
Please help and tell me what to do from here…
Please give more details about the last operation cose a lot of people have problem with it!!!
. i Have the message in cmd : “Suitable USB device not found, waiting” and it’s freezing like that. I have last version of Nokia PC suite….but the PC (xp) is not recognizing the driver. Any solutions?
Why the living hell would you only put that it’s not compatible with Windows 7 x64 AT THE FREAKING END OF THE 10 STEPS?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?! ARE YOU FECKING REAL?!?!?!?!??! I COULD HAVE BRICKED MY PHONE YOU MORONS.
thanks, artikel yang bagus, akhirnya N900 saya dapat berfungsi sebagaimana mestinya ….
Could anyone help me please
