You can use Nokia Maploader to upload the map data to the phone. This way when you are navigating by foot or by car, you do NOT need any data connection. Making for the only true free navigation that can be used offline.

But the good thing about ovi map is once u have the loaded maps you wouldn’t need it connected and the gps would still work.

what free? We still need to pay for the data usage as the Ovi maps requires to connect to the internet.

Unless we have the data plan package. The per data usage charges is a bit extreme.

Nokia had to make this decision for once they have made the right decision. Brilliant to know maps and navigation in future will not cost a penny. Just hope the N900 gets this offer as well and soonish.
