MyPaint for the N900: An Even More Powerful Drawing Tool

Remember the N900’s built-in Sketch app? This powerful  little app has turned the N900 into a popular art making machine with countless examples to back-it-up. Sure, the app has its limitations, but the results speak  for themselves. Just take a look at the Sketches from the N900 Flickr group, Jay’s Avatar sketch, Ms Jen’s sketches and our very own N900 Sketch Gallery.

Now there’s an even more powerful tool called MyPaint, available from the Maemo.org Catalog in the N900”s App manager. The app’s larger than normal download size at 9.4MB is expected considering its various brushes and advanced functionality.

Nokia N8 will be last Symbian-based Nseries

n8lastnseries

Bad news for some, but perhaps a necessary step in Nokia plans to step up to the competition: The Nokia N8 will  be the last Symbian-power Nseries device. Future devices, starting from the N9 will be powered by MeeGo. This in theory should leave Symbian for mid- to low-end devices, most likely in the X, C and Eseries.

This move couldn’t have come at a better time, as Nseries devices were starting to feel outdated, despite some very solid hardware. The N8 itself is a good example of great hardware and outdated feeling software, despite running the latest version  Symbian^3. Even Symbian^4 which has been drastically improved under the hood, doesn’t look all that different and certainly isn’t capable of supporting a Nokia flagship with competition from Apple and various Android devices.

What do you think, is this a good or a bad move?

How to: Adding Yahoo email account to Nokia Messaging

NokiaMessagingYahoo

NokiaMessagingYahoo2

If you’ve followed our guide on How to properly setup and configure Nokia Messaging on the N900, you might have come across this problem. If try to add a Yahoo email to your Nokia Messaging account at http://email.nokia.com it will tell you: “This email address must be added on the phone.”

You can easily add Google Mail, Windows Live Hotmail, Ovi Mail, and POP/IMAP email accounts at http://email.nokia.com, but not a Yahoo account. The reason is simple, as a Nokia rep explains: “Yahoo is somewhat special for Nokia Messaging in that you aren’t allowed to add Yahoo email addresses on the email.nokia.com website.  That’s basically due to legal reasons–per our Yahoo contract we need to disable Yahoo support in a few countries (the list is small and includes US embargoed countries like Cuba) and we can’t really tell what country you are in unless you do it from the phone.”

Review: Nokia Carrying Case CP-408 for the N900

CP-408introWhen we took a look at Nokia’s first and official case for the N900, the CP-321, we liked the stylish and simple design, but it was several steps back in convenience: It lacked any access to the lock switch, microUSB port, 3.5mm headphone jack, camera button and both the camera lens and speakers were blocked. It was pretty and helped to to protect the N900, but it sure wasn’t useful. Nokia went back to the drawing board and came up with what we have here: the Nokia CP-408. Would we choose it over the CP-321? Is it the ultimate N900 case?
