In honor of Earth Day, we decided  to bring you a few tips that should help you save energy and be environmentally friendly using your Nokia devices.

1.Save Energy by unplugging: Nokia has added a feature to newer devices where it instructs the user to “unplug charger from power supply to save energy.” This also counts for older device where you don’t get this message.  It seems that when leaving the charger plugged in (not connected to the phone), it will still consume some energy, consequently energy is being wasted. By unplugging your charger from the wall outlet when your device is fully charged, you save energy. Considering that there are Millions and perhaps Billions of Nokia devices out there, you can see how quickly the amounts of energy adds up.

2.Use Nokia’s line of High Efficiency Chargers: Nokia’s  High Efficiency Chargers AC-15, AC-10 and AC-8 are environmentally friendly chargers. These chargers received a 5-star rating for energy saving as it consumes minimal power if left plugged in after the battery has fully charged, this is based on common energy-rating system for chargers. Tip number 1 still applies, but just in case you do forget to unplug your charger, you’d be happy to know that these consume a fraction of the energy when compared to other chargers. Some newer device like the N900 already come with these efficient chargers.

3.Change your phone settings: By lowering your backlight brightness and time-out, update interval for your Nokia Nokia Messaging, Close applications when not needed (Yes multi-tasking uses power and energy), switch off W-fi when not needed, set search interval for Wi-fi to “Never” and turn of Bluetooth when not in use, we can not only  have a longer battery but also consume less energy.

4.Recycle your old Nokia: Either your phone, battery or charger can be dropped of at a Nokia Nokia Care point  to have it recycled. Click here to find a local Nokia Care point. In some countries (such as the UK and the US) you can also return your phone by registering online, printing a pre-paid postal label and sending it free of charge to a Nokia authorized recycler.

5.Green apps to help you on your journey:

A.A number of Nokia devices now support OVI Maps with lifetime Drive and Walk voice guide navigation. Why not leave the car at home and use OVI Maps to take you to your next destination. And it’s all free!

B.Alternatively you can monitor your progress while using your bike or by foot, using the newly released Nokia Sports Tracker.

C.Nokia also has the Green Explorer service, basically a free service which helps people to make the most sustainable, eco-friendly choices while travelling. The service can be found here. Along with the service, Nokia also has a Green Explorer app, which can be downloaded here. Both service and app can also be found here.

D.Nokia We:Offset calculates the CO2 emissions caused by your travels then translates the emission into the amount of money you can donate to the project.  Its possible to even donate directly from your phone. The app can be downloaded here.

E.Last but not least there’s also the less-known Connect2earth service, a global green on-line community powered by Nokia.

6. Buy an Eco-friendly Nokia:The packaging of all new Nokia’s use sustainable materials, have reduced packaging size and volume of material, many include high efficiency charger and the materials of these devices have been chosen with the environment in mind. But when it comes to Eco friendly  Nokia there are two very special options: The  Nokia 3110 Evolve and Nokia 5630 XpressMusic. The 3110 Evolve for example with its bio-covers are 50% from renewable sources and it comes in a small packaging made of 60 percent recycled content and ofcourse includes Nokia’s high efficiency chargers.

This also counts for older device where you don’t get this message.  It seems that when leaving the charger plugged in (not connected to the phone), it will still consume some energy, consequently energy is being wasted. As we all know, when it comes to the environment every bit helps!
