If you are thinking about upgrading to the N86 8MP, here’s a comparison between the N82 and the newly released N86 8MP. What do you think of the results?

Ever since I saw the N82 TV Commercial I thought it was one of the nicest and poetic ads I’ve seen in a while. It truly beats everything I have seen before from a stylistic point-of-view, so if you haven’t seen it yet, it can be found here. Apparently it comes from Lowe Worldwide, Singapore and was directed by Mark Molloy of Exit Films, Melbourne.

Not sure about the name but I think it’s called “Fairytale”. But what I’ve been really wondering about is the interesting tune playing in the background and who the artist could be. Sometimes I see these great commercial with a great track playing in the background, but it really is very difficult to find who made it in the case you wanted to get hold of the tack. In this case I did a little searching and found it by chance. This one is called “The Water Jet Cilice” from Fingerlings 3 EP by Andrew Bird. Great little track, well worth the purchase or download. Just in case you were wondering about that…

One of the features of my Canon digital camera I liked is the “Stich Assist” feature. Basically it allows you to take a series of pictures and later on stitch them together creating a single panoramic image. The N82 now also supports the feature through an included app called Panoman. It would be great if this feature was included as part of the camera software, but having it as a third party app is ok for now. I hope Nokia is busy making this feature part of the camera software through a future N82 software update. There are a lot of software out there right now that can stitch images together, but the beauty Panoman comes from the fact that it’s all done on the phone itself, no need to get home to stitch photo’s: it’s all created and uploaded on the phone itself. another plus is that it does most of the work for you by analyzing how two pictures fit together and snapping when it “thinks” is right. All you need is keep a steady hand and pan to the right. You basically start of by taking an image. It then saves this image and displays it on the screen, while showing a live camera view next to it. This allows it to see how the next image would “fit” when put next to the image already taken: this is important as the key in creating a seamless panoramic image is to stitch images that are a continuation of the other. Now this process isn’t fail-proof as some of the panoramas aren’t always perfect, but I found that it works great most of the time. The image resolution will vary depending on the amount of images you stitch, but the height will always be the same: the test image I created was; 3084×625. A good tip is to use a tripod, as any slight movement from the hand can confuse the software and possibly ruin the final result.

One thing I would change about this app is adding the ability for you to manually take shots and not only have the app to decide when to take shots. The screenshots and the video should give you an idea as to what you can expect.

Thanks to Stefan from Intomobile for helping me hooking up my Canon to the Nokia DT-22 stand. The N82 is noticeably longer when compared to the N95 and N81. That’s all for now, I’ll let the pictures do the talking.

Ok, so I’ve had some time to play with the N82 and here are a few initial observations:

-Feels very speedy overall, camera starts very quickly. The lens is recessed and has the sliding cover, just the way I like it. The camera is activated by a switch and let me tell you, this thing feels incredible to use. It has a nice click to it and reacts very very quickly. The images are again very clean with very little image noise. Remember those N73 pictures with the over usage of edge-enhancment and noise reduction? Those days are finally gone as the N82 pics are very neutral (colors), with very little noise and they have kept the image enhancements to a minimum. The N82 clearly takes the best pictures in the Nseries, beating even the N95.

-The N82 is a huge finger print magnet, especially the front. But the white back won’t show finger prints that easily. But it does make for a slippery device. The design is very oblong, looks very N73-ish and in fact it’s supposed to be the successor to that device.

-The phone feels very speedy overall. It has native auto-rotation. The rotation happens almost instantly, even when using TV-out. Only negative point is that the camera and the icons don’t re-orient when you turn the phone.

-Just like the N95 8GB and N81 the screen flush with the rest of the body.

-Stereo speakers are not on the opposite sides, but are both on the right side.

-microUSB is present on the left side with microSD support.
