Nokia has given an official solution to a problem that we reported here on The Nokia Guide. Several users reported that Nokia Messaging simply stopped pushing emails from their Windows Live Hotmail accounts and that they received an email saying that: “ our email service has been unable to connect to your email service.”
Nokia Messaging Update : Windows Live Hotmail service notification3rd Edition devices have had support for Live Messenger for quite a while now, with the only solution for 5th edition being a version created for the Asian market. While that version worked fine, it had Asian characters, advertising and links aimed at the Asian market, it lacked the familiar Live Messenger contacts (Which can be found in Contacts) and Hotmail email in Messaging.
A new version has appeared on OVI store that updates the application bringing up to speed with the current desktop version of Live Messenger. The best part is that it doesn’t have any advertising and fully integrates into 5th edition, setting up your Hotmail account in Messaging and putting all your Live Messenger contacts in a new tab in Contacts, joining the regular contacts and OVI contacts tab.
The app is sadly not available for all countries and regions with the familiar messaging saying that: “This item is not available for your country. Explore more great content in the “Related” section below.”
I really can’t understand why this app isn’t available to all regions and countries, when everyone can freely download the desktop version. Even Nokia’s site dedicated Windows Live site merely points you to the Download! app (Which isn’t used anymore), lacking any links to download the actual apps. What’s even worse is that 5th edition devices are not even mentioned!
If you’re unable to download the 5th edition of Live Messenger on OVI, you can download it right here.

Official Live Messenger support for 5th edition is hereWhen I got my Nokia N97, one of the first things I tried setting up was Nokia Messaging. For several days I tried getting it to work, without much luck. Nokia Messaging is an enhanced version of the N97’s regular Email program, that’s why it is recommended to download and use this new program. Devices like the E75 come with it embedded in the ROM.
To setup the application, the user is expected to create a Nokia Messaging account online and than add their various email addresses to that account. This will allow the emails received to be pushed to Nokia Messaging on the N97. Setup on the device is done through a provisioning SMS that contains a download link. Because this SMS is send from a specific Nokia Messaging account all you need to do is enter your password, while the rest is done automatically.
Problem was that when I received the SMS and installed Nokia Messaging it just didn’t allow me to continue with setup. Pressing the “Start” button didn’t work. Another problem I was encountering was that it started asking me for both my email and password. Doing this would simply created an email account in the built-in email program. A correct installation of Nokia Messaging is supposed to only ask for a password.
After days of trying I finally understood what was causing the problem: Nokia Messaging requires a Pack Data connection for the setup process. Earlier I tried setting up via Wi-Fi which led to many problems. If you’re trying to setup Nokia Messaging just simply use a Packet data connection and setup should be a breeze.
How has your experience been with Nokia Messaging? Did you encounter problems with setup and did this tip help? Let me know.
Problem Solved: Nokia Messaging requires Packet Data connection for setupWe’ve just received confirmation that Windows Live Hotmail access on Nokia Messaging is now up and running again. From the looks of it the Nokia Messaging team has been pretty busy with not only creating a version of the app for S60 5th edition devices, but also keeping us up to date via Twitter and actively making changes based on user feedback. Great job! What has been your experience with Nokia Messaging?
Update: Windows Live Hotmail Access RestoredWe’ve just received confirmation that Hotmail for the Nokia Messaging serivce is temporarily down. This is something that has been going on since Sunday the 10th of May. Davis Fields, Product Manager on Nokia Messaging has stated that: “This is a temporary problem – we’re working on resolving it now. We’re also exploring better ways to notify users of outages in the future, but this is a unique problem that we’re working on.”
I’ve tried adding a new Hotmail account to Nokia messaging, without any luck. On the actual app, all emails from my Hotmail account are not being displayed and instead you get notification saying that the service is down.
Update: The issues also seems to be affecting new installs. Setup of a new Nokia Messaging on a new Nokia 5800 XpressMusic doesn’t seem to be working with the setup basically stuck at the part where the SMS is send to allow the client provisioning.
